If you are just getting started with a new website, it’s very important that you convince Google that you are a brand. Google loves brands, and once it identifies your site as a legitimate brand, you will definitely see an overall bump in your rankings.
How can you secure your standing as a brand in Google’s eyes? Well, the best piece of advice I could give would start with the selection of your name. I would have a name that cannot be confused with any other website or company. A name like Zynga was perfect for SEO reasons because it was a completely new name and Google wouldn’t confuse that name with anything else out there on the Internet. You don’t have to create a name that is completely made up, but you should make sure there aren’t any other websites out there with a very similar name. If there are, it will be harder to convince Google that you are a brand.
Outside of finding a good name, the next best thing to do is to secure the brand name on all the major social media and Web 2.0 accounts. What that means is that if your website is johnscomputers.com, then you should make sure you get johnscomputers.tumblr.com, facebook.com/johnscomputers, johnscomputers.wordpress.com, etc. You want to create as many branded properties across these types of sites as possible. When you create these branded properties, you are doing a couple of things. First, you are making sure that no one else can get those properties and take over a property that should be yours. You don’t want anyone else trying to confuse people by taking over one of your branded properties. Also, you are proving to Google that you are a brand. On each site, you’ll put a link back to your main website, proving to Google that you care a lot about becoming a big brand.
There are two main reasons to secure your brand on the Internet. First, you don’t want anyone else having control over a site that should be one of your branded properties. Second, you will definitely get a bump in your rankings on Google. With that being said, make sure you secure your brand across the Internet if you haven’t done so already!
